Unpretentious and infectious like a cheeky grin, these ambient melodies would be as comfortable at the beach as in a dimly lit bar. Indeed the lyrics delivered in Malcolm’s sultry voice speak of long afternoons and longer nights spent in both places.
James Malcolm sites his musical influences as Neil Young, David Gray,Jeff buckley, David bowie, The Rolling Stones, kings of leon just to name a few but too many to list . “More important than those though, is a rich life experience – best friends, broken hearts, too many crazy nights out, enjoying watching his daughter grow up, and the beat of life in the city set against the rhythm of the ocean.”
A salt of the earth character, the many years of spending time on Great Barrier Island,& living in Tairua right on the Beach in the Coromandel have fed strongly into his music. “I’m a laid back person, so the songs I write come from a place of warmth and affection. My sound is a blend of Soul ,folk, blues, R&B, rock, pop, and classical, without fitting squarely into any of those.” The sound is raw James Malcolm, without thought for target audiences or what people want to hear. “This is who I am. The songs express moments in my life and the lives of people around me.”
Originally from Christchurch, James is a self confessed hippie who is happiest on his surf board, or singing to his daughter ,“Surfing is like meditation for me. It’s good for the soul. Give me a beer, boardies, jandals and my guitar and I’m a happy man!”
